Does Cannabis Belong In Your Skincare Products?

Does Cannabis Belong In Your Skincare Products

The recent boom in cannabis-based skincare products is bound to come with some confusion. We’ve all seen marijuana leaves on the cannabis products we get from the dispensary, so seeing them in our local beauty store is strange for many.

Does cannabis belong in our skincare products? More importantly, if it does– why is it so popular? Let’s dive into these questions and explore the recent merge of the cannabis industry and the skincare industry.

What Are Cannabis Skincare Products?

The skincare products you see with the marijuana leaf on them most likely use CBD or hemp as an essential ingredient. Both come from the cannabis plant, but hemp has been used in skincare for years. CBD or cannabidiol is a compound from cannabis plants, but it’s not the typical “kush” you might be thinking about. CBD is often used as an ingredient or treatment due to its health benefits. CBD reacts with the system in our body known as the endocannabinoid system and has plenty of positive effects for some patients.

That being said, CBD products are typically used to treat symptoms of anxiety, provide pain relief, and other health-related treatments. So, what are they doing with our skincare products? This begs the question of whether or not the health benefits of CBD can also translate to promoting healthy skin.

Is Cannabis Skincare Legal?

Considering these products are mainly made with CBD from cannabis rather than THC– yes, it’s legal. CBD is legal in all 50 states.

While CBD may be derived from the cannabis plant, that doesn’t mean they provide the same experience. CBD has a non-psychoactive effect, unlike THC-based cannabis products. This means that products containing CBD will not cause you to feel “high,” like marijuana products that contain THC.

Is It Safe To Use CBD Skincare

Is It Safe To Use CBD Skincare?

Many studies have shown that CBD products are safe to use, and there is a minimal chance of unwanted side effects. Most side effects are uncommon & not severe, such as fatigue or drowsiness. However, that relates to CBD products such as CBD oil, edible, capsule, and more options that are made for health or pain treatment.

When it comes to skincare products with CBD ingredients, it seems to be safe as well. Many CBD topical treatments are used on the skin safely, so it’s unlikely that you will have a bad reaction to CBD skincare products. In fact, some people believe that these cannabis skincare products are a better option for people with sensitive skin.

Are CBD skincare products good for your skin?

The world of skincare has transitioned through multiple phases of popular fads, trends, and more. It can be hard to keep up with sometimes, especially when many of these trends slowly disappear from the market over time. Cannabis skincare has recently seen a rise in popularity, which may have you wondering if it’s worth trying out or just another passing fad.

While we cannot predict whether cannabis/CBD skincare will maintain popularity in the beauty & skincare community, we can discuss the benefits of CBD skin products.

One of the most notable qualities of CBD in relation to skincare is that cannabidiol has anti-inflammatory properties. Many people struggle with skin problems that result from inflammation in the skin. Plenty of skin conditions like rosacea, psoriasis, or even everyday acne struggles can benefit from anti-inflammatory skin products.

Therefore, CBD-infused skincare may be helpful when your skin feels red, puffy, dry, or even sore/swollen from acne or other conditions. But, is calming inflammation the only benefit of CBD for your skin?

Some studies have shown that CBD has promising results in helping to fight acne breakouts or acne-prone skin. Acne is an inflammatory skin issue; therefore, the anti-inflammatory benefits of CBD/cannabis skincare can provide a helpful solution.

However, other studies have noticed that cannabinoids may be able to decrease the amount of excess sebum on the skin. Sebum refers to oils produced by your skin, which may lead to severe or sudden acne breakouts if the production of sebum is excessive. This isn’t something that everyone can control about their skin. However, these studies have shown that CBD may help provide balance to your skin oil/sebum production, therefore helping reduce acne breakouts.

Another beneficial property of CBD is that cannabinoids have antioxidant properties. You may have noticed some commercials for skin products will emphasize how they contain “rich antioxidants” for your skin. This is a notable property because antioxidants can help reduce signs of aging. Antioxidant-rich skin products are widely known to reduce wrinkles, diminish dullness, and rejuvenate the skin.

While CBD has antioxidant properties, that doesn’t mean it can provide as effective benefits as other anti-aging skin products on the market. However, using CBD-infused skin products can still provide these benefits or even enhance them when added to other anti-aging creams.

Another reason CBD products may be a good choice for your skincare regime is that it has soothing properties that can work well for sensitive skin. Many popular skincare products contain certain chemicals or ingredients that can be harsh or irritating for sensitive skin. CBD products, on the other hand, are less likely to irritate because of the soothing benefits.

CBD Oil vs. CBD Skincare

CBD Oil vs. CBD Skincare

Skin products that use CBD as an ingredient can have some benefits for the health and appearance of your skin. But can the same be said of regular CBD products? There are CBD topical oils, lotions, and butters that are safe to use on the skin. If you don’t want to open your wallet to buy some new CBD-infused skincare, it may be easier to just add a few drops to mix with your moisturizer instead. Remember to make sure that the oil you are using is safe for topical use on the skin.

Cannabis plants can provide compounds like THC, CBD, or hemp that may be used as ingredients in your skincare. THC, however, is probably not something you will find in skincare products. However, many popular skincare lines are including CBD in their products, and they may be worth a try! The cannabinoid properties can help fight inflammation, acne, signs of aging, and more– so, it may be the skincare solution you’re looking for!
